This very rare and historically important dinar was actually struck by ´Abd al-Rahman "el Sanchuelo" the youngest son of al Mansur. In the I.A ´Abd al Rahman names as khadjib his infant son ´Abd al -´Azziz. This absurd appointment and his own claim to the succession after Hisham II was the spark that started the Cordoba revolution or "fitna" which rapidly lead to the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate and the start of the turbulent Taifa period.

Struck by the Umayyads in Madinat Fas.

Madinat Fas
389H
4.07gr 23mm
III Jarique, pg. 319, nº 10. This coin.

The 'Abd Allah in I.A is 'Abd Allah ibn Yahya ibn Abi 'Amir a nephew of al-Mansur. This unique dinar is the only specimen known for this mint during whole period of its control by the Umayyads.

There is an interesting hiatus in the coinage of al-Andalus from the year 372 to 376 inclusive were no coins seem to have been struck. ( Miles's references for the years 372, 373, 374, 375 and 379 - his numbers 272, 274, 275, 276 & 277 respectively are to be prudently discarded as very dubious indirect references of which, to date, none have ever been confirmed.)

From the events registered in the historical chronicles of those years there is no event or combination of them which would in any way justify the closure of the mint for five years. Was it then deemed that there were too many coins in circulation?

Some of the dirhams of 379H, similar to the following two, were mistakenly classified as of 399H by Miles ( see his numbers 340 (c)- (n). Even though the somewhat fancy epigraphy of the second digit, with the decreasing strokes of the initial "sin" fusing into the "ba", could be somewhat confusing the sudden and unique re-appearance, at this late a date, of 'Amir on the I.A should have been enough to give the initial reading a second thought.

The following four coins (nº 41-44) are quite atypical for this period and were, as such, set apart by
Vives. They all lack the obligatory "´Amir" on the II.A and the name of the mint master on the I.A. There seems to be no reasonable explanation for this double omition.
